1880 SILVER DOLLAR

This striking necklace features black striped agate nuggets and a pendant that has been hand-wrapped in reclaimed sterling silver wire. It is finished with an authentic Bali silver toggle clasp.

Agates are a banded and or multi-colored member of the chalcedony-microcrystalline quartz family, with bands caused by the presence of iron and manganese. Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in a host rock. As a result, agate often is found as a round nodule with concentric bands like the rings of a tree trunk. It is said to be named for the place it first was found along the River Achates (now called the River Drillo) in Sicily.

Agate, one of the oldest known gems has been valued for thousands of years. In ancient times, agate was highly valued as a talisman or amulet. It was said to quench thirst and protect from fever, and is reputed to aid insomnia and give sweet dreams. The major sources of agate are Australia, Canada, Mexico and the U.S.A. The gemstones of Maryland (Patuxent River Stone), Minnesota (Lake Superior agate) and South Dakota (Fairburn agate) are all agates.

Bali silver is handcrafted by talented silversmiths throughout the the island of Bali, a small island in the Indonesian archipelago, which is renowned for its artistic and cultural heritage.

For centuries, Balinese artists have perfected their skills. Communities specialize in specific artistic traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. As a result, these silversmiths display superb technique and immense patience. Each bead is carefully made with exquisite detail. Every silver dot is individually placed, every surface patterned by hand. Each bead is a work of art, and no two are exactly alike.

Please be sure to take note of the sizes that are carefully listed here as items will appear larger on your computer monitor than they actually are.

* The black striped agate nuggets are 4x5mm in long, and the entire necklace is approximately 21 inches (53.4cm) in length.
* The carnelian piece is about 18x25mm, or about 1 inch long, making the entire pendant hang just over an inch from the Bali silver toggle clasp.
